Italian Lawmakers Support Global Sumud Flotilla Mission

(MENAFN) Opposition members in Italy’s parliament have voiced support for an upcoming maritime initiative known as the Global Sumud Flotilla “Spring 2026 Mission,” describing it as a humanitarian effort and pledging political attention to help ensure its safe passage.

According to reports, the mission was introduced during a press briefing in the Chamber of Deputies, where lawmakers from left-leaning parties joined fleet representatives, activists, and civil society groups to present its objectives.

A member of the Five Star Movement said that public interest in the initiative highlights a growing disconnect between citizens and governments, stating: “This fleet has given the world a great lesson in humanity,”

Another representative from the same political group described the flotilla as being focused on delivering humanitarian support, according to reports.

From the Democratic Party, a senior lawmaker thanked the organizers and said parliamentary representatives would monitor developments closely. She also stated: “We will try to do everything necessary at the political and institutional level to ensure the safe journey of this peaceful and humanitarian fleet,”

She further criticized recent divisions within the European Union regarding foreign policy decisions, particularly the lack of agreement among foreign ministers on suspending a trade arrangement, despite support from several member states.

According to reports, she argued that failing to take such action reflected a serious political responsibility in ongoing regional developments.
