Icon of Italian Fashion Valentino Garavani Passes Away at 93

(MENAFN) Valentino Garavani, the legendary Italian designer who built one of the country’s most prestigious luxury fashion houses, has died at 93, his foundation announced Monday.

“Valentino Garavani passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones,” the foundation said in a statement posted on the US platform Instagram.

The designer will lie in state at Rome’s Piazza Mignanelli on Jan. 21–22. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs, according to the foundation.

Born in Lombardy in May 1932, Garavani rose to global prominence under his singular name, celebrated for lavish, refined creations that captivated generations of admirers. He co-founded the Valentino fashion house in 1960, cementing his place among Italy’s elite designers, often mentioned in the same breath as Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld.

His work defined an era of 20th-century fashion, dressing stars and public figures including Elizabeth Taylor, Nancy Reagan, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid tribute on X, describing Garavani as an “undisputed master of style and elegance” and an “eternal symbol of Italian high fashion.” She added that while Italy has lost a legend, “his legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
